Water conditioners and water softeners are the same thing.  There are just two different names.  Most people call the units softeners because they soften your water.  Water softeners and conditioners work by filtering water through a resin bed.  The resin releases the softer salt particles in order to attract the heavier metals like magnesium and iron.  The system is recharged or regenerated 2 to 3 times a week based on your water needs.  A salt water brine is passed through the resin bed after it has been agitated.  This allows the resin to attract more and more of the hard metals in your water.
